Understanding the Kiln Drying Process

What to Expect from the Kiln Drying Process

Mother Nature has the final say in how lumber comes out of the kiln. The outcome depends on the species, where the tree grew, water intake, terrain (hillside vs. flat), and wind exposure — all of which create stress in the wood.

When a tree is milled down from a large diameter to a thin slab, it loses its structural support and will naturally move in the direction the stress takes it.

We use the best available knowledge and technology to produce the flattest, smoothest results possible — but we cannot guarantee crack-free or perfectly flat lumber.

Preparing Your Lumber for the Kiln

Lumber must be neatly stacked with 1-inch stickers (wood or aluminum spacers placed between each board). Stickers must be aligned vertically so weight distributes evenly — misaligned stickers can cause bowing and cupping.

Stickers allow airflow across every board surface for even drying.

Pricing & Booking

Pricing is based on lumber being kiln-ready (properly stickered and stacked).

A flat, non-refundable booking fee is required to reserve your space in the kiln. This holds your spot and ensures your scheduled time is available.

Booking can be done online via our scheduling calendar, with payment processed securely through Square.
